Buying and Selling Securities in Capital Market: A Beginner's Guide

In today’s fast-paced financial world, buying and selling securities has never been easier. With the advent of digital platforms and the rise of online trading, investors now have direct access to the securities markets. But to participate in these transactions, you need a Demat account. This account is where your securities—like stocks, bonds, or mutual funds—are stored in digital form. In this article, we’ll break down the process of buying and selling securities, keeping it simple, up-to-date, and relevant to the latest trends.

What is a Demat Account?

A Demat (short for "Dematerialized") account is a digital account that holds your securities in an electronic format, making it easier to buy, sell, and transfer them without the need for physical certificates. It’s like an online locker where your investments are safely stored, ready for easy access.

Before you start buying and selling securities, it’s important to know that you need two accounts:

  1. Demat Account – Where your securities are held.

  2. Trading Account – Where you place buy and sell orders for your securities.
Most brokers offer both accounts together, making it easy to manage your investments.

Step 1: Opening a Demat and Trading Account

Before you can buy or sell securities, you need to open a Demat and trading account. This can be done through a SEBI registered Depository Participant (DP) and/or Stock broker. The process is straightforward:

  1. Choose DP & Broker: Select a reputable DP and broker based on your convenience. Consider factors such as user-friendly interfaces, reliable customer service and Tariff structures of both the DP and broker when making your choice.

  2. Complete the KYC Process: Provide KYC details and other details along with the documents like PAN, Proof of identity and address proofs etc.)to complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) process.

  3. Link Your Bank Account: Link your bank account to facilitate the transfer of funds for buying and selling securities.

Once your account is set up and activated, you’re ready to start investing.

Step 2: Buying Securities Through Online Portal

To buy securities, you need to place an order through your trading account, and the purchased securities will then be held in your Demat account. Here’s how the process works:

  1. Log In to Your Trading Platform: Use your credentials to log into your broker’s trading app or website.

  2. Search for the Security: Whether it’s a stock, bond, or ETF, search for the security you wish to buy using the stock symbol or name.

  3. Place an Order: Once you’ve selected the security, enter the number of shares or units you want to buy and set the price (market price or limit price).

○ Market Order: Buy at the best available market price.

○ Limit Order: Set a maximum price you’re willing to pay for the security.

  1. Confirm the Purchase: Review the details, including the total cost (including brokerage fees), and confirm the order.

  2. Transaction Execution: The broker will execute the order on your behalf, and your Demat account will reflect the purchase once the transaction is settled.

Settlement: In India, securities transactions typically settle on a T+1 or T+0 cycle, which means the securities will be credited to your Demat account within one or same working day.

Step 3: Selling Securities Through Online Portal

Selling securities is just as straightforward as buying them. Here's how the selling process works:

  1. Log In to Your Trading Platform: Use the same account credentials to access your trading platform.

  2. Select the Securities to Sell: Navigate to your Demat account, view your holdings, and choose the securities you wish to sell.

  3. Place a Sell Order: Enter the number of shares or units you want to sell. You can choose to sell at the current market price (market order) or set a price at which you’re willing to sell (limit order).

  4. Confirm the Sale: Check the order details, including potential brokerage fees, and confirm the transaction.

  5. Transaction Execution: Once your sell order is executed, the securities will be transferred from your Demat account to the buyer’s account. The funds will be credited to your linked bank account after the settlement cycle.

Settlement: Similar to buying, selling is also subject to the T+1 or T+0 settlement cycle.

Key Considerations While Buying and Selling Securities

  1. Brokerage Fees and DP charged: Always check the tariff charged by your broker and DP. Some offer zero-commission trades, while others charge per transaction.

  2. Market Hours: The Indian stock market operates from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM (Monday to Friday), and orders can only be placed during these hours.

  3. Risk Management: Remember that investing in securities involves risk. Diversifying your portfolio and setting stop-loss orders can help protect your investments from sudden market downturns.

Conclusion

Buying and selling securities is a simple process once you understand the steps involved. By opening a Demat and trading account, you gain the ability to invest in a wide range of financial instruments, including stocks, bonds to mutual funds, ETFs etc.
